My boss (who has said a good amount of programming knowledge), Java or Visual Basic from work and I am myself to learning or the other.
Can someone explain why Java or VB be a better choice for learning would be?

Java is most commonly used. Either is ok. VB is more secured. You should ask your boss that question, because he's the one who is going to give you orders. ;)
I would opt for the VB. The power and flexibility with ease support ratio is very high. Basic start from the beginning as a program (some argue that the script is not not really) programming language for non-programmers to program, too. It remains a very good tool for this purpose and has many new features and improvements that had, while retaining the original target.
Visual Basic better than their needs.
Visual Basic is more like using Java Widley.

Java is more powerful than VB. Java is platform independent and therefore a program written in Java can run on any operating system. VB programs are usually about an economy that is based on the Windows-limited environment. However, VB is easier to learn than Java. They have weight, it would be an advantage. I want to tell your boss that you take luanguage benefit both you and the majority of society. Tell him it is more powerful than Java and platform independent, but VB is easier to learn and have less time to be well informed, to ask his opinion. This will not do you cocerned what is best for the company.
